Investing the nest egg

Noel Whittaker | November 13 2009 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

I have a large nest egg that I'd like to invest in a low-risk profile. Do you have any suggestions?

Q.

I have $1m in AUD as my nest egg. I own my home, have no debt, and earn a good salary. I do not need to use the money for five years or more, so would like it to generate some growth during this period. I cannot afford to lose it to a 'black swan' event or similar, so capital preservation is essential. I was thinking of a conservative and balanced fund/portfolio? I would appreciate your thoughts.

A.

You should be speaking to a financial advisor who will be able to help design a portfolio that will match your goals and risk profile. Ask the advisor about index funds because by definition the index can never go broke and you will be guaranteed a good performance in the medium to long term.
