What was your first job? My first job was as a
dish pig at a friend's dad's restaurant. He was a cantankerous
Czech who had a French restaurant and probably shouldn't have been
employing 14-year-olds.
What did you get paid? Not enough. I think it
was about 10 bucks an hour but I was working Thursday, Friday,
Saturday nights, as well as going to school, so I didn't get a
chance to spend it.
Are you a saver or a spender? Much to my
father's chagrin, I'm a spender. I live for the moment.
What was your biggest splurge? When I was 19,
after finishing my first professional TV gig, I spent $1400 on a
1973 Gibson Les Paul guitar. I still have it, I've used it a lot
and it's probably worth three grand now, so it wasn't a bad
investment.
What was your best bargain? My dad suggested I
buy a few Commonwealth Bank shares when they were first released. I
think the original prospectus price was somewhere in the region of
six bucks a share. They have gone as high as the $60 mark. I think
they're around $45 at the moment.
What was the best thing you've got free? I was
recently given a Fender Telecaster Deluxe guitar by a friend. I had
done her a few favours during the year and this was her way of
saying thank you. I was utterly speechless.
What is your greatest money-saving secret?
Separate accounts. Always put something in a spare account and try
your hardest not to touch it.
What's the best piece of investment advice you have
heard? Buy low, sell high. It seems so simple doesn't
it?
What's the best piece of investment advice you've
actually acted upon? Dad's advice to buy Commonwealth.
I wish I had $1 for every time... someone said:
“I wish I had $1 for every time ...”
I'd be a millionaire if I gave up... my career
and started a religion.
