Starting to invest

Noel Whittaker | July 28 2009 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

What is the best way to start investing?

Q.

I have approximately $800 per month that I would like to invest in a managed fund. Could you advise me of where to start? Are they a good vehicle for my money?

A.

A good managed fund is an excellent investment for an investor starting off but, because there are hundreds available, you should take advice to ensure that the one you chose is appropriate for your goals and risk profile. Keep in mind that you should not invest in growth assets such as property and shares unless you have a 5-10 year timeframe in mind.
