Share market downfall

Noel Whittaker | July 1 2009 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

Is it a good time to enter the market or are there still worse times to come?

Q.

Fearing what was coming, we cashed out of shares in July, 2007. It seems that PE ratios are still higher than the historical averages and housing affordability is still at around seven times earnings vs the typical three times. Is it yet time to be thinking about going back into the market, or is there worse to come?

A.

It's a sad truth that nobody can tell for sure when it is the right time to enter and leave the market. However, if you can take a long-term view, and buy quality shares when the market is having a downturn you should do well. Remember, the market has never failed to make a new high after a major low.
