Why we shouldn't be too hard on super funds this year

David Ciampa | June 23 2008 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

Yes, it's true if your fund had gone all growth and maybe whacked it in mining and resources the story would've been different but, alas, that would be ignoring the risk involved in the sector. And racers that were winning on gas and oil stocks have felt the volatility in the sector, with big losers including Austex Oil (AOK) 17 per cent, Metgasco (MEL) down 15 per cent and coal bed methane explorer Pure Energy (PES) 14 per cent. In the past week we've seen many stocks criticised for their debt levels, including investment bank Babcock and Brown (BNB) and its subsidiaries. The market reaction to worries about BNB has seen pressure applied to the debt-reliant infrastructure sector, with Asciano (AIO) and Macquarie Airports (MAP) both experiencing a drop of more than 10 per cent in the last week of trade. Despite taking a few bogies from Asciano and Pure Energy, Stuart Brand still leads but for the first time his portfolio is below par. Maybe he can draw inspiration from Tiger Woods who last week again showed how not to choke on a lead.
