Some million dollar advice

David Ciampa | June 18 2008 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

What was your first job?

At 15 I got a job as a shop assistant at Mitre 10. I still know a coach bolt from an engine or dyna bolt!

What did you get paid?

I think it was about $8 an hour. I remember having to work lots of hours during the holidays to earn a decent amount.

Are you a saver or a spender?

I'm a bit of both, actually. I consciously save as much as I can but, in saying that, I don't go without. I usually buy what I want to buy and do what I want to do.

What do you spend your money on?

Recently I have just moved house so I have been spending quite a bit of money on furniture and accessories for my new place.

How do you save?

I save by dividing my money into specific accounts. For example, any money I make from modelling assignments goesinto a special bank account thatI don't access.

What was your most irresponsible purchase?

I have made several irresponsible clothing purchases. I still have clothes I bought a year ago that have their tags on!

Credit cards are a) great; b) helpful; c) a poor investment; d) work of the devil

b) helpful.

Does budgeting work for you?

I don't really budget but I have learnt to control my money.

If I was given $20,000 I would buy ... at the moment a luxury first-class round-the-world holiday.

If I was given $20,000 I would invest in ... property.

What's the best piece of investment advice you have heard?

From your very first job, learn to save a little bit of money. It gets you into a good saving habit.

What's the best piece of investment advice you have actually acted upon?

I consolidated my super and credit cards.
