Kynan Barker isn't sure how he'd feel if a million dollars landed
in his lap. Disappointed, probably.
"Thanks to inflation, one million dollars isn't what it used to
be," he sighs. "Years ago it was enough to actually make you a
millionaire. These days you need a million dollars, a website and
an unfeasible business plan to call yourself a millionaire."
Not that Barker's day-job as a writer for Roving Enterprises -
the creative team behind the TV shows Rove Live and Skithouse -
puts him within range of the big tycoons. "We're looked after all
right, I suppose.
Hey, I'm pretty happy getting paid to sit on my arse and write
jokes all day," he says.
So, no need for a million then?
"Really, it's more trouble than it's worth. If you have a
million and then you pick up something on the way home - a loaf of
bread, say - then you're not a millionaire any more, you've only
got $999,996. That's not going to impress the girl who catches the
bus."
And if he were forced to spend the money?
"If a million landed in my lap, I'd probably be feeling lucky
and spend it on half a million $2 scratchies. You gotta get
something back - even if it's only $10, at least I don't have the
headache of being a millionaire anymore."
